How to get a book published
If you are interested in getting your book published, you might find the following tips useful:
-
If you are writing non-fiction, try to obtain some interest from a publisher before you write the book. This will save you wasting time on writing something that might never be published.
-
If you intend to write a novel you will need to write all or most of it before pitching to a publisher.
-
Buy a copy of the Writers’ and Artists' Yearbook. This contains contact details for publishers and provides information about the type of books they will publish and the amount of royalties paid.
-
Don’t send a whole manuscript to a publisher, unless they have specifically asked for you to do so.
-
Send a short letter, explaining your book idea. Include a synopsis of the book, list of contents and two sample chapters. Remember to include your contact details and a stamped, addressed envelope. Some publishers will let you submit a proposal online. Visit the relevant website for more information. Make sure that you follow their guidelines and procedures.
-
Do your research carefully. Make sure that you only send proposals to publishers that publish your topic.
-
Be prepared for rejection. Don’t get disheartened. Instead, find another publisher and send your work to them. It is good practice to send your work to one publisher at a time, rather than to several publishers simultaneously.
-
Be courteous and professional at all times.
-
If you are lucky enough to receive a contract, read it carefully. If you are in any doubt about the contract and any specific clauses, seek expert advice. You can visit the Society of Authors’ website for more information and advice (www.societyofauthors.org).
